Belarus adopts the death penalty for those convicted of high treason
The Belarusian leader, Alyaksandr Lukashenka

Belarusian leader Alyaksandr Lukashenka has signed into law a law that allows for the death penalty against officials and soldiers convicted of high treason, his office said.

Belarus, a close ally of Russia, is the only country in Europe that still applies the death penalty. This sentence is already pronounced for crimes such as murders or acts of terrorism.

Executions are carried out with a single shot to the head.

The new law is part of changes to the Criminal Code aimed at strengthening Belarus' fight against "extremist [terrorist] crimes and anti-state orientation".

Under the changes approved by Lukashenka, anyone found guilty of "discrediting" the Belarusian military will face prison terms. Russia passed similar legislation after launching its invasion of Ukraine a year ago.

Belarus has not sent troops to Ukraine, but allowed Russia to use its territory to launch the war in February 2022 and has since allowed Russian planes and drones to use its airspace to attack Ukraine.
