Georgia withdraws 'foreign agents' law after violent protests

After several days of violent protests in the capital, the Government of Georgia announced on Thursday that it will withdraw from the parliament the draft law on the possible restriction of the freedom of the media and civil society.

The Georgian Dream Party and its allies cited "divisiveness in society" caused by the proposed law as the reason for the withdrawal.

Russian influence is a sensitive issue in Georgia. Russia invaded Georgia in 2008, after which Moscow recognized South Ossetia and another region, Abkhazia, as independent countries and stationed thousands of its soldiers in those areas.

More than 60 media and civil society groups pledged last month that they will not comply with this law, if it were to be passed./ Rel
