In the dispute over NATO membership, Sweden and Finland resumed talks with Turkey. At the right time.
In the dispute between Sweden and Finland over their NATO membership, both countries have resumed discussions with Turkey. After a pause of several weeks, the countries' negotiators met in Brussels. This information was confirmed by military alliance circles. The Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, also participated in the meeting.
Turkey and Hungary are against
Meanwhile, Sweden has introduced a tougher terrorism bill. In the future, participation in a terrorist organization or financing of such participation will be punished. Violators risk several years in prison, as the bill indicates. This is done to fill a loophole in the law, it said.
Parliament must now vote on the law. The changes are expected to take effect on June 1. The fact that the bill is coming now, however, is seen as a signal in NATO's conflict with Turkey.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson called the tightening a very important step in honoring the commitments Sweden made at the end of June in an agreement with Turkey and Finland. This agreement would pave the way for NATO membership - without success so far./ DW
