Iran threatens to destroy underwater internet cables in the Strait of Hormuz

Iran, using its recent military influence in the Strait of Hormuz, is targeting one of the most critical elements of the global economy: the undersea internet cables that connect Europe, Asia, and the Persian Gulf and carry a vast amount of internet and financial traffic.

According to officials and state media cited by CNN, Tehran is considering imposing fees for cable use by major technology companies such as Google, Microsoft, Meta and Amazon, while leaving open the possibility of cutting off traffic in case of non-compliance.

This strategy is part of a broader effort by Iran to turn its geographical position into a strategic advantage, using the Strait of Hormuz not only for energy exports but also for managing the global flow of data.

Undersea cables form the backbone of global connectivity, carrying data for banking systems, military communications, artificial intelligence infrastructure and internet services.
