A serious incident is reported to have occurred in Modena, Italy, where a person crashed a vehicle into a crowd of pedestrians.

As a result, seven people were injured, some of them in serious condition. According to Italian media reports, a woman is at risk of losing both legs from the strong impact.

The perpetrator of the serious incident, a 30-year-old man, has been arrested by the police, and it is reported that he also stabbed a passerby who tried to stop him.

The 30-year-old is being questioned at the police station as authorities work to determine whether he was under the influence of narcotics or committed a deliberate attack.

The mayor of Modena, Massimo Mezzetti, who spoke from the scene, said this was a tragic act.

"We need to understand the nature of the incident, but it is a tragic act. I am deeply shocked. Whatever its nature, it is a very serious event. If it was an attack, it would be even more serious. The perpetrator appears to be North African; he is at the police station and being questioned ," Mezzeti was reported as saying.

Witnesses at the scene on Via Emilia Centro said the car was traveling at at least 100 miles per hour as it approached the sidewalk and struck pedestrians. /CNA
