Xi-Trump summit ends without major agreement, focus on Iran and Taiwan

Chinese leader Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump wrapped up a landmark bilateral summit, which was watched with great international attention due to tensions between the two world superpowers.

After the meeting, Trump stated that many different problems had been resolved during the talks, however, no concrete agreements were announced on the key issues that continue to affect the rivalry between the US and China.

One of the main topics of discussion was Iran. Trump said he and Xi agreed that Tehran should not possess nuclear weapons. The US president also added that the United States is not as dependent on the opening of the Strait of Hormuz as China is, underlining the strategic importance of this sea route for the Chinese economy.

On the other hand, China's Foreign Ministry stated that the war with Iran should never have happened, reflecting Beijing's stance against escalating the conflict in the Middle East.

Another sensitive issue was Taiwan. Xi Jinping warned Trump that Taiwan remains the most important issue in China-US relations and that mishandling it could create a very dangerous situation.

After the summit, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that US policy towards Taiwan remains unchanged, signaling that Washington has not changed its stance on the island.

Although the summit was considered historic for its diplomatic significance, it did not produce any major concrete agreements, while the strategic rivalry between the US and China continues to remain one of the main global challenges./ CNA
