"If not handled properly, there could be conflicts"/ Taiwan reacts to

Taiwan has accused China of being the sole source of insecurity in the region, after Chinese leader Xi Jinping reportedly said that Taiwan's independence is "incompatible" with peace.

"China's military threat is the sole source of insecurity in the Taiwan Strait and the broader Indo-Pacific region. Continuously improving defense and effective joint deterrence are the most critical factors in ensuring regional security," said Cabinet spokeswoman Michelle Lee in response to a reporter who asked about Xi's comments on Taiwan.

Taipei's objection came after Xi Jinping told US President Donald Trump that Taiwan was the most important issue in China-US relations and could create a very dangerous situation if handled poorly.

China's Communist Party claims the self-governing island as its own territory and has vowed to take it one day, by force if necessary.

"Taiwan independence and peace are as incompatible as fire and water. Maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is the greatest common denominator between China and the US ," Xi was reported as saying by media. 

Washington maintains strong unofficial relations with democratically governed Taiwan. Last week, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that there should be no destabilizing events related to Taiwan in the mutual interest of both countries. The US has also reiterated its commitments to Taiwan in recent days. /CNA
