Trump-Xi meeting/ No women sitting at the negotiating table

US President Donald Trump and Xi Jinping held talks for two hours and 15 minutes, facing each other at a long table surrounded by more than a dozen men in suits.

There were no women present at the table, either from the American or Chinese sides. Women are underrepresented at the highest levels of government in both Beijing and Washington. Neither the US nor China has ever had a female leader.

There are currently no women on China's Politburo, the group of senior officials that oversees the party and central government. Trump's White House chief of staff, Susie Wiles, is the first woman to serve in the role, but she did not travel with the president to Beijing.

Monica Crowley, the White House chief of protocol, traveled to Beijing but was not present for the meeting with Xi. There are currently only four women in Trump's cabinet, following the firings and resignations of three female appointees in recent months. /CNA
