Train collides with bus/ 8 people die in Bangkok

A collision between a freight train and a public transport bus has killed at least eight people and injured dozens more in Bangkok.

Police and rescue officials said the collision was so severe that it caused a fire that engulfed the passenger bus.

Several nearby vehicles were also affected during the incident. The fire has been brought under control by firefighters while teams continue search and rescue operations.

The incident happened near Makkasan train station in the city center on Saturday afternoon.

Deputy Transport Minister Siripong Angkasakulkiat said initial reports indicated the bus had stopped on the tracks due to heavy traffic, preventing the crossing barriers from closing.

The train carrying containers failed to stop in time, and according to authorities, investigations are ongoing to fully elucidate the causes of the serious accident. /CNA
