Whale found dead near Danish island after being rescued off German coast

A humpback whale rescued after beaching in Germany has been found dead near a Danish island. The whale was first seen stranded on a sandbank on March 23, near the island of Poel on Germany's Baltic coast.

She swam free in early May after a water-filled boat carried her into the North Sea. The operation to rescue her and return her to safe waters was funded by two German entrepreneurs.

The whale's body was spotted on Thursday near the Danish island of Anholt, which lies between Denmark and Sweden. Authorities were not immediately able to confirm that it was the same whale. In a statement, the Danish Environmental Protection Agency said that conditions on Saturday made it possible to verify the whale's identity and locate its tracking device.

The agency said people should not approach the whale because it could carry diseases that could be transmitted to humans. There could also be a risk of explosion, it added, due to large volumes of internal gas caused by decomposition. /CNA
