Samedin Mehmeti has resigned from the leadership of the Kosovo Police, announced the Minister of Internal Affairs, Xhelal Sveçla.

The reason for the resignation, according to Svecla, is related to "personal reasons and professional conscience", after the rape of an 11-year-old girl in Pristina by five suspects.

"Already the prime minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, has released Mehmet from his position and has appointed as acting director general, Fehmi Hoti, deputy director of the Kosovo Police" , said Sveçla through a post on Facebook.

Kosovo authorities announced earlier in the day that they have also arrested the fifth suspect. The Basic Prosecutor's Office of Pristina, meanwhile, said on August 30 that it has imposed a one-month detention on two people who allegedly raped the 11-year-old.

A day earlier, the same measure was imposed on two other suspects.

The minor was allegedly raped by five people on August 27 in Pristina. Kosovo police said she was sent to a shelter.

The case allegedly happened in a park in the capital and in another unknown location.

This case provoked anger among citizens and a protest was held in Pristina on August 30 against violence against girls and women./ REL
