6.1 magnitude earthquake hits Turkey, 19 injured

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Sindirgi region of the western province of Balikesir overnight. The country's Disaster and Emergency Management Agency recorded the earthquake's focal depth at 5.99 km.

Strong tremors were also felt in Izmir and Istanbul, which are located approximately 250 km from the epicenter of the earthquake, as well as in the neighboring prefectures of Magnesia, Kioutachia, Prusa and Dardanelles.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said no casualties were reported from the quake. He also announced that ministry teams were conducting inspections on the site to identify any problems.

Meanwhile, Turkey's Health Minister announced that 19 people were injured from causes such as jumping from heights and falls caused by their attempts to leave homes and shops. /CNA
