Imamoglu in prison/ Another arrest warrant issued for Istanbul mayor

A Turkish court has issued an arrest warrant for the imprisoned mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu. He is charged by the court with political espionage. The court accuses Imamoglu of fraud during his presidential campaign fundraising and espionage to secure international support.

Imamoglu, a fierce political opponent of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has been in prison since March awaiting trial on corruption charges. 

The new “espionage” investigation has also targeted Imamoglu’s 2019 and 2024 campaign manager, Necdet Ozkan, and the director of the Tele1 network, Merdan Yanardag.

Hundreds of officials and elected officials from Imamoglu’s opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) are in prison after a series of prosecutions, mostly on corruption charges. The CHP denies the charges, describing them as a government attempt to remove Erdogan’s political opponents and weaken the party. /CNA
