Orban expected to talk to Trump about sanctions on Russian oil next week

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban will also discuss US sanctions on Russian oil companies during his meeting with United States President Donald Trump in Washington next week, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on Monday.

Trump, who is a close ally of the Hungarian leader, last week imposed sanctions on Russia for the first time in his second term, targeting the companies Lukoil and Rosneft, in an attempt to pressure Moscow to accept a ceasefire in Ukraine.

Trump's decision has raised dilemmas for Hungary and Slovakia, as they are the largest buyers of Russian oil in the European Union. They had also previously secured exemptions from EU restrictions.

Orban had announced as early as October that he would visit Washington, and had said that the agenda for the talks was almost completely set.

"Regarding our energy supply... in the second half of next week there is a possibility that the prime minister will discuss this issue personally with the US president in Washington," Szijjarto said at a press conference.

According to him, the new US sanctions, which come into effect at the end of November, are not currently causing problems or reducing oil imports from Russia for Hungary.

On Friday, Orban said Hungary was working to find a way to circumvent US sanctions on Russian oil companies.

He did not provide details, but neither did he imply that he intends to openly challenge the measures.

Orban said he had held talks with Hungary's national oil and gas company, MOL, regarding the sanctions.

The Hungarian leader, who faces elections in 2026, has cultivated a strong personal relationship with Trump over the years.

His tough stance against immigration has helped him gain support from Trump supporters in the United States.

He said earlier this month that he would also discuss economic issues during his upcoming meeting with Trump. /REL
