Washington shooting suspect pleads not guilty

A man accused of attacking the White House Correspondents' Association dinner in Washington, D.C. last month has pleaded not guilty.

Cole Tomas Allen, 31, was charged with federal weapons crimes and the attempted assassination of US President Donald Trump.

Unlawful possession of a firearm charges include use of a firearm during a violent crime and interstate transportation of a firearm with the intent to commit a felony.

Allen appeared in court on Monday wearing an orange suit and was handcuffed at the ankles and feet, according to CBS News, the BBC's American partner.

Prosecutors allege that Allen tried to force his way through a security checkpoint and fired a shot at a U.S. Secret Service agent during the event at the Washington Hilton hotel. The federal agent was shot in the exchange of gunfire but was saved by his bulletproof vest.

Agents arrested Allen just before the stairs leading down to a ballroom where the annual White House Correspondents' Dinner was being held - attended by journalists, Trump and many senior US officials.

Allen's court appearance was the first time he appeared before U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden, who will preside over the rest of the case.

His lawyers have asked Judge McFadden to disqualify U.S. District Attorney Jeanine Pirro and Todd Blanche from participating in the case, according to CBS News.

Eugene Ohm, a lawyer representing Allen, said they had presented themselves as victims of the attack in public statements and that it would be "completely inappropriate" for the pair to lead the prosecution of this case./CNA, translated by BBC
