Hungary announces date for parliamentary elections

Hungary has announced that parliamentary elections will be held on April 12. Polls suggest that nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who has been in power since 2010, could suffer a defeat in the election.

In power for nearly 16 years, Orban has been lagging in independent polls for months, amid economic stagnation, growing dissatisfaction with public services and scandals related to child protection.

The Tisza Party of Peter Magyar, a former Orban official turned fierce critic, is ahead of the Hungarian prime minister's Fidesz party.

"Since last spring, independent polls have shown a stable double-digit lead for Tisza, around 50%, while Fidesz is around 35% ," Szabolcs Péc, an analyst at the Hungarian Iranityu Institute, told AFP, adding that there are still around 90 days left until the election.

"I have set the date for the 2026 parliamentary elections. The vote will be held on Sunday, April 12, 2026," Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok announced on Facebook today.

According to the latest polls, apart from Fidesz and Tisza, the far-right party has a chance of winning seats, while all other parties, including the center-left Democratic Coalition, are below the 5% threshold needed to enter parliament. /CNA
