The Nobel Peace Prize winner is sentenced to 10 years in prison in Belarus

A court in Minsk has sentenced the Belarusian laureate of the Nobel Peace Prize, Ales Bialiatski, to 10 years in prison on charges of smuggling and tax evasion.

Human rights activists and Western governments have called the sentence "politically motivated punishment" by authoritarian leader Alexander Lukashenko.

A human rights center in Minsk said the district court also sentenced activists Valyantsin Stefanovic and Uladzimer Labkovic to nine years and seven years in prison, respectively, in the same case.
