Attacks in Lebanon / The surgeon makes a shocking confession: I worked as a
Surgeons like Elias Jaradeh worked around the clock to treat thousands of wounded

A Lebanese surgeon has described how the huge influx of seriously wounded from two days of explosive device attacks forced him to act like a "robot" just to be able to continue working.

Surgeon Elias Jaradeh said he was treating women and children, but most of the patients he treated were young. The surgeon confessed that a large part were seriously injured and many of them had lost their sight.

The dead and wounded in Lebanon include fighters from Hezbollah - the Iran-backed armed group that has traded cross-border fire with Israel for months and is classified as a terrorist organization by the UK and US.

But members of their families have also been killed or injured, along with innocent bystanders. Elias Jaradeh described the wounded he treated as mostly civilians.

Israel has been blamed for the bombings, which killed 37 people, including two children, but there has been no comment from Israel on this.

Dr Jaradeh, who is also an MP from the "Change" parliamentary bloc, was working at a specialized eye and ear hospital where some of the most injured people were taken. He said it had affected medical teams, including himself.

"And, yes, it is very difficult," said the surgeon. "You have to detach. More or less, you're robotic. That's how you should act, but inside you're deeply wounded. You're seeing the nation wounded."

Surgeons like Dr Jaradeh worked for almost 24 hours continuously on the injured, many of whom have lost their sight or hands, the country's health minister told the BBC.

Eye specialist Prof Elias Warrak told BBC Arabic that in one night he performed more eye procedures than he had done in his entire career.

"It was very difficult," he said. "Most of the patients were young people in their twenties and in some cases I had to have both eyes removed. In my entire life I had never seen scenes like what I saw yesterday."

Health Minister Firass Abiad told the BBC that the victims' injuries would be life-changing.

"This is something that unfortunately will require a lot of rehabilitation," he said./ CNA
