US officials now believe that a Gaza ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas is not expected to be reached before the end of President Joe Biden's term in January. The news was announced on Thursday by the American newspaper 'Wall Street Journal'.

The paper cited high-level officials at the White House, the State Department and the Pentagon, but did not name them.

Washington has previously said that 90% of the agreement to secure a ceasefire and the release of hostages had been reached, while Vice President Kamala Harris has repeatedly said that Washington has been working "round the clock" to reach a deal.

The United States and other countries that have served as mediators in the talks, such as Qatar and Egypt, have been trying for months to reach a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, but without being able to finalize it.

Negotiations have continued to clear two hurdles: Israel's request to keep its forces in the Philadelphia corridor with the aim of maintaining neutral territory between Gaza and Egypt, and over the specifics of exchanging Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners being held. from Israel.

President Biden presented a three-phase cease-fire proposal on May 31, which he said at the time, Israel had agreed to. The deal has hit roadblocks, and officials have said for weeks that a new proposal would be presented soon.

Critics and human rights groups have asked Washington to condition military support for Israel, but the US has not given up support for its ally.
