The United States and Serbia have signed on Wednesday an agreement for strategic cooperation in the field of energy in Serbia.
The US State Department said in a statement that "this agreement will expand opportunities for US companies to invest in the energy sector in Serbia, including promoting US investments that will strengthen the US-Serbia strategic partnership".
The agreement was signed on Wednesday by the United States Undersecretary for Economic Growth, Energy and Environment, Jose Fernandez, and Serbia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Marko Djuric.
Fernandez said that "our ability to work in clean energy, as well as the opportunity for American companies to invest in technologies from that field in Serbia, is something that we value very much."
He added that the US is happy that cooperation with Serbia in the field of green energy will continue.
"Climate change is the challenge of our time. But it is also an opportunity to invest in the energy of the future and the first step was taken today," added Fernandez.
Djuric said the agreement will facilitate the transition to green energy in Serbia and provide better access to clean energy.
"This agreement will result in more reliable and long-term supply. Serbian and American citizens and energy companies will benefit from this," Gjuric added.
The head of Serbian diplomacy said that the signing of the agreement sends a strong message of Serbia's commitment to improving overall relations with the US.
"The very word 'strategic' speaks of the fact that we are now one step closer to a strategic partnership and strategic, good, quality and long-term relations with the USA", Gjuri? concluded.
Djuriq said that in the next two decades, Serbia will increase its electricity consumption fourfold and that it needs a partnership with industries, companies and countries that have successfully increased their production capacity in the past decades./ REL
