New attacks by Houthi rebels

Three suspected attacks by Yemen's Houthi rebels have targeted a ship in the Babel-Mandeb Strait, which connects the Gulf of Aden to the Red Sea. Authorities said guards from a private company fired at a drone that was headed toward the ship.

Houthi rebels did not immediately claim responsibility for the attack, although for months they have been targeting ships in the Red Sea because of Israel's war against Hamas - the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union - in the Strip. of Gaza.

After a two-week hiatus, attacks by Yemeni rebels resumed after the assassination of Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Iran, amid concerns that the war could widen. Iran supports the Houthis, who are part of the so-called "Axis of Resistance".

"Operations are continuing. Our operations against the enemy Israel and operations at sea," Yemeni rebel leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi warned during a speech on Thursday.

"The decision for a response is a collective decision at the level of the 'Axis of Resistance'," he added.

On Thursday, Yemeni rebels launched their first rocket attack after a two-week hiatus, the British military said, adding that several rockets exploded near a ship. The second attack occurred on Friday morning, when missiles "exploded close to the ship", the British military said.

"The vessel and crew are reported to be safe."

The private security company, Ambrey, reported that the ship was hit by a drone, but the attack did not cause casualties or material damage.

Then came the third attack, when the private company's guards "opened fire and successfully destroyed" the ship from which the rocket attacks were launched, Ambrey said.

Houthi rebels have targeted more than 70 ships with missiles and drones and killed four sailors since the war in Gaza began in October last year. They have also managed to take control of one ship and have sunk two others. Their other attacks have been thwarted by the US-led coalition in the Red Sea, or have failed to hit their targets./ REL
