US broadcaster ABC announced on Thursday that Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris have agreed to participate in a presidential debate on September 10.

ABC made the announcement shortly after Trump said at a news conference that he has proposed three presidential debates with three television networks, adding that he has settled on dates in September.

Trump agreed to go to the ABC debate days after he wrote on his social network that he would not participate in the broadcaster's debate, citing a lawsuit that he has filed.

"I think it's very important to have debates," Trump said Thursday.

"I can't wait to go to the debates because I think we need to be blunt," he added.

The Harris campaign has not yet commented on the debate issue.

Harris entered the race for the White House after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race for re-election last month.

After Biden withdrew from the presidential race and endorsed Harris, Trump said he would not debate her because she was not an official candidate.

As evidence of the lack of support for him, he said that former President Barack Obama had not supported him.

But Obama endorsed Harris a day later, and last week, Harris secured the necessary delegate votes to become the Democratic nominee for the November election./ REL
