Suspected of sharing government information with Epstein/British police launch

The Metropolitan Police have launched a criminal investigation into Peter Mandelson on charges of abuse of public office. This comes after the former Labour Party minister and US ambassador was accused of passing sensitive government information to the US financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Emails released by the US Department of Justice (DoJ) appear to show that Lord Mandelson passed information to Epstein when he was business secretary under former Prime Minister Gordon Brown in 2009.

Lord Mandelson did not respond to requests for comment, but his position is that he did not act in any criminal manner and that he was not motivated by financial gain.

Mandelson - who was sacked as the UK's ambassador to the US last year - has told parliamentary authorities he intends to resign from the House of Lords today.

On Monday, the Scottish National Party and Reform UK said they had reported the colleague to Scotland Yard and on Tuesday, the UK government said it had referred material to police after assessing emails that Lord Mandelson appears to have sent to Epstein when he was business secretary.

A No. 10 spokesman said an initial review of the documents had revealed they contained market-sensitive information about the 2008 financial crisis.

Over the weekend, Lord Mandelson reiterated his regret for his ongoing association with Epstein, apologizing to the women and girls who suffered at his hands.

Although Lord Mandelson will no longer be a member of the Lords after he resigns, he will retain his peerage status for life, a title that can only be stripped of by an Act of Parliament.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer began Tuesday morning's cabinet meeting by saying Lord Mandelson had let his country down and that the alleged leak of emails was disgraceful, according to Downing Street. /CNA
