DW: Strait of Hormuz, Trump gives Iran a 48-hour ultimatum

US President Donald Trump is aiming to force Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz with an ultimatum. If this does not happen within 48 hours, he is threatening to attack Iran's nuclear power plants.

US President Donald Trump has threatened to destroy Iran's energy infrastructure if the country does not fully open the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours. Otherwise, the US will attack and destroy Iranian power plants, "starting with the biggest!" Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

The response from Tehran was immediate: if Iran's fuel and energy infrastructure is attacked, the Iranian military will target all energy infrastructure and desalination plants linked to the US throughout the Gulf region, the Fars news agency quoted a Revolutionary Guard spokesman as saying.

Trump's deadline to open the strait expires in the early hours of Tuesday morning (March 24) Central European Time. If the US president does indeed order an attack on Iranian power plants, this could constitute a war crime, according to experts./ DW
