The Basic Court of Pristina has acquitted the Speaker of Parliament Albulena Haxhiu and then-MPs Pal Lekaj, Donika Kadaj-Bujupi and Besa Baftiu of the charge of throwing tear gas at the Kosovo Assembly.

The news was announced at a media conference by their lawyers who said that the accused have been acquitted of all counts of the indictment and have been declared innocent.

Burim Halili, lawyer for Speaker Haxhiu, stated that the case has been protracted and that there is now a final decision that acquits them of all charges.

"Ms. Haxhiu had taken a clear stance against the Association. Then, when many events took place at that time in parliament, they were detained along with other deputies, where several elements that were suspicious were detained against them. And a judicial review was held and it was never possible to prove that the suspicious elements had anything to do with the criminal offense for which they were detained. Then the case was prolonged, where it had gone and reached after ten years we also have the statute of limitations, where in this specific case we have a decision where Albulena Haxhiu and the others are acquitted of all counts of the indictment", said Halili.

Meanwhile, Musa Damati, Pal Lekaj's lawyer, said that after ten years, their innocence has been proven in full accordance with the law.

"My client, Mr. Pal Lekaj, has been declared innocent of all charges he was charged with in the case known to the public, the tear gas case. So we are dealing with the well-known case of throwing tear gas canisters, for which they were indicted and charged, and it is a case that has been reviewed for ten years by the Kosovo authorities ," the lawyer said. /CNA
