Referendum on Justice in Italy/ Italian citizens head to the ballot boxes today

Italian citizens will head to the polls today for the Justice referendum. Italians are voting today for the referendum that confirms the constitutional law containing the "Regulations on the Judicial System and the Creation of a Disciplinary Court".

Voting centers will be open today from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., and tomorrow, Monday, March 23, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. According to data from the Ministry of Interior, 51,424,729 voters are eligible to vote, including 5,477,619 from abroad.

What are Italians voting for today?

Italy's electorate will vote for or against approving changes to the country's post-fascist constitution that would shake up the organization of the justice system.

A victory for the pro-resolution campaign would bring changes to the way judges and prosecutors are recruited and governed, including separating their career paths, creating two governing councils selected by lottery, and creating a court to handle disciplinary matters.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni says the changes are essential for impartiality, especially to eliminate what she calls left-wing political "factions" that dominate the judiciary.

Opponents claim they will weaken the power and independence of judges and prosecutors, making them more vulnerable to government control. /CNA
