Which candidate do young people support, Biden or Trump?

Most young voters in this presidential election in the United States say they would like to have other alternatives to the candidacies of President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. One of the reasons for this is the age of the current candidates. But what do they think of the presidential candidates of the two largest parties in America?

In the race between the two expected presidential candidates of the two main parties in America, due to their age, issues have been raised regarding their fitness for the position of President.

This has been a big concern especially for young voters. Desmond Kager wishes there were other alternatives.

"If the Republicans or the Democrats can offer a candidate that is really worth voting for, then I would vote for them," he says.

A Pew Research poll last week found that two-thirds of voters under the age of 30 would switch between the two candidates if given the chance. But who are the young people who support candidates Biden and Trump?

Francesca Panniello supports Mr. Biden because of concern for reproductive rights.

"Abortion is an important issue to me. Abortion care and the right to choose in reproductive matters are important to me," she says.

Abortion rights and the use of marijuana will be on the ballot in Florida this November. These issues are drawing support from younger voters to Democratic Party causes, says Jayden D'Onofrio.

"Young voters have a real opportunity to impact the electoral landscape here in Florida. We've seen that abortion rights and marijuana use are important issues for young voters. Their biggest preference is the right to chosen for reproductive issues," he says.

Some young people oppose President Biden for the support he has given to Israel for the war in the Gaza Strip. However, he is expected to get the support of voter Eliana Stein.

"One of the most important things to me is continued support for Israel, especially throughout this ongoing conflict. So I really appreciate everything that President Biden has done to support Israel in the current conflict," she says.

Among the young people supporting Mr. Trump are Wisconsin voters Briauna Bonilla and Jonathan Boyer.

"I mean I've tried to have conversations with people who don't like Mr. Trump and they say, 'You can leave. I don't want to talk to you anymore.' So I think that's the main problem. People are not open to listening. They think that if you like Mr. Trump, you're a terrible person," says Briauna Bonilla.

"Yeah, there's never any open discussion," says voter Jonathan Boyer.

"When I have an open discussion with Mr. Trump's opponents, I get the impression that I can't say anything, or that they don't want to talk to me, or that they will share the content of the discussion with everyone else," says the voter. Briauna Bonilla.

Mr. Trump's young supporters are used to their peers questioning their political choices, says Isaiah Turner.

"When I go to restaurants with hats that say 'Trump 2024,' people look at me strangely, but it doesn't bother me."

Turner says he admires Mr Trump's anti-corruption stance.

"I think there are a lot of scandalous things going on all over the world. I think Mr. Trump is the only person who has the guts to deal with these people. He is not afraid of them. I think he will do the best for the country," he says.

A Reuters news agency and Ipsos poll in March showed that President Biden has a three percent lead over former President Trump among Americans aged 18 to 29. This is a much smaller advantage than the 24% lead with which Biden won the youth vote four years ago./ Voa
