The latest British intelligence report says that Russia is recruiting migrant workers from Central Asia to help Russian forces in the war against Ukraine.
In the latest intelligence update on the war in Ukraine, the British Ministry of Defense reported that Russian military recruiters "have been visiting mosques and immigration offices" to target migrant workers who have come to Russia from Central Asia.
"In immigration offices, staff routinely try to recruit immigrants, " the British ministry said on Twitter.
They even offer them "a fast track to Russian citizenship, from six months to a year, instead of the usual five-year procedure."
Radio Free Europe previously reported that recruiters lure migrant workers by offering financial bonuses worth $2,390 and salaries of up to $4,160 a month.
The recruits are likely to be sent to fight on the front line, British intelligence experts said, as part of Russia's push to meet its goal of 400,000 volunteers fighting in Ukraine.
London suggested that the Russian government "is trying to delay a new mandatory mobilization for as long as possible" given that the last wave of conscription did not find much support
Russian President Vladimir Putin calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine.
The West has responded to Russia, hitting the economy of this country with harsh sanctions.
In April, Putin signed a law creating a conscription system that also bans men from leaving the country if they ignore the invitation.
As a result of the war, thousands of people have died and millions more have been displaced from their homes./ REL
