Britain, the trial begins against three Bulgarians accused of being Russian

Katrin Ivanova, Vanya Gaberova, and Tihomir Ivanchev deny charges of espionage and cooperation in a network involving a Russian agent with the alias Richard Ticz.

The banned Katrin Ivanova has rejected the accusations that she was carrying forged identity documents. At the opening of the trial in London, prosecutor Alison Morgan said that two other individuals, Orlin Roussev and Bizer Dzhambazov, had admitted to being part of the espionage network.

"Between 2020 and 2023, the defendants, in cooperation with a number of other individuals, spied for Russia," said the prosecutor.

Ms Morgan said the spy ring had carried out surveillance operations, used false identities, deployed high-tech cameras and produced detailed reports in exchange for significant sums of money.

On Tuesday, Russia expelled a British diplomat whom it accused of espionage. In October, the UK's intelligence chief accused Russian intelligence services of seeking to cause "chaos"./ VOA
