Four victims after the sinking of a ship in Greece

Four people, including two children, have died after a ship carrying migrants struck reefs near the Greek island of Samos, causing the vessel to sink, officials said on November 28.

Sixteen people were rescued, but it is unclear how many people were on board the ship.

The Greek coast guard has launched search and rescue operations involving patrol vessels, rescue boats and there are also teams on the ground looking for any possible migrants who may have escaped the sinking.

This is the second deadly incident this week involving the sinking of migrant boats in Samos.

On Monday, November 25, eight migrants – six children and two women – died after a boat sank off the coast of Samos.

The island of Samos and other Greek islands in the eastern Aegean Sea are important transit points for migrants crossing from Turkey to the European Union. The arrival of migrants in recent months, according to the Greek authorities, is related to the wars in the Middle East and parts of Africa./ CNA
