A number of top nominees and appointees for US President-elect Donald Trump's incoming cabinet have been targeted by bomb threats and false reporting, Trump's transition team said Wednesday.

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said it is investigating the matter.

"Last night and this morning, several of President Trump's administration's Cabinet nominees and appointees were targeted by violent and un-American threats against themselves and those who live with them," the spokeswoman for the team said. To Trump, Caroline Leavitt.

She said law enforcement and other authorities "reacted quickly to ensure the safety of those who were threatened. President Trump and the entire transition team are grateful for their quick response," Leavitt said.

Among those threatened were Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York, who has been nominated by Trump to serve as the next ambassador to the United Nations, Matt Gaetz, Trump's initial nominee to serve as attorney general, and former New York congressman Lee Zeldin, who has been tapped to lead the Environmental Protection Agency.

Susie Wiles, Trump's incoming chief of staff, and Pam Bondi, the former Florida attorney general whom Trump has nominated to replace Gaetz, also threatened them, according to an official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The FBI said in a statement that it is "aware of numerous bomb threats and other incidents against nominees and appointees of the incoming administration" and that it is "working with our law enforcement partners."

"We take all potential threats seriously and, as always, encourage members of the public to immediately report anything they consider suspicious to the authorities," she said./REL
