The new President of the European Council, Antonio Costa

The new president of the European Council, Antonio Costa, is expected to gather the leaders of the six countries of the Western Balkans next week, a few days after taking office.

Radio Free Europe learns from diplomatic sources that he will organize this meeting on Tuesday, December 3 in Brussels.

Costa, the former prime minister of Portugal, will officially begin his term at the head of the Council on Sunday, December 1, after being appointed to the position to succeed the current president, Charles Michel.

According to diplomatic sources in Brussels, Costa wants to send a signal with this meeting that in his work he will consider the Western Balkan region as a priority and that he wants to have regular relations with the leaders of the region.

This meeting will also be an opportunity for him to meet personally with the leaders of the countries of the region, but also to discuss the preparation of a special summit of the EU and the Western Balkans, which would take place on December 18 in Brussels.

Summits between the EU and the Western Balkans have already become regular and take place at least once a year. The new president of the Council is expected to keep this tradition.

The same day when Costa begins his mandate, the mandate of the new European Commission is also expected to begin.

Usually, in the high-level meetings between the EU and the countries of the region, when the president of the European Council is the host, the commissioners for enlargement and the high representatives for foreign policy and security also participate.

It has been unofficially announced that the future high representative of the EU, Kaja Kallas, and the commissioner for enlargement, Marta Kos, will be present at the dinner on December 3.

This would be the first time that these two members of the new European Commission meet with the leaders of the countries of the Western Balkans./REL
