Nordic, Baltic states and Poland will strengthen support for Ukraine

The Nordic and Baltic states as well as Poland said on Wednesday that in the coming months they will increase support for Ukraine, including for the defense industry and investments to increase ammunition.

"We are committed to strengthening deterrence mechanisms as well as strengthening our defenses, including resilience against direct and hybrid attacks as well as through expanding sanctions against Russia and those who enable its aggression," said a statement from the leaders of the Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Norway, Poland and Sweden.

The leaders have gathered in Harpsund, southwest of Stockholm, for talks involving transatlantic relations, regional security cooperation and a common policy on the war in Ukraine.

The election of Donald Trump for a second presidential term has raised questions about the commitment of the United States to support Ukraine in the war against Russia and about Washington's role in NATO.

Many analysts believe Europe will have to spend more on its defense and bolster Ukraine's military efforts after the US President-elect takes office in January.

The Nordic and Baltic countries, some of which border Russia, are among Ukraine's biggest supporters.

According to data from the Kiel Institute on Aid to Ukraine, aid from the Nordic, Baltic countries and Poland amounts to about 24 billion euros, the second largest after that of the United States.

"Europe must take greater responsibility for its own security," Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said in a statement separate from that of other leaders.

"This is a prerequisite for us to increase cooperation and continue to support Ukraine, which is fighting both for its security and ours, in the long term," he emphasized./ VOA
