US President-elect Donald Trump has nominated retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg to serve as the United States' special envoy for the war in Ukraine.

Trump announced on Wednesday on his social network, Truth Social, that he has chosen Kellogg for the position.

Kellogg, who was chief of staff for the White House National Security Council during Trump's tenure from 2017 to 2021 and national security adviser to former Vice President Mike Pence, is likely to play a key role in the effort to resolve the conflict in his new position.

While the US does not currently have a special envoy for the war in Ukraine, Trump has expressed interest in the past in creating the position.

During this month it was reported that Trump would nominate Richard Grenell for this position.

In the past, Grenelli served as the US ambassador to Germany, then as the special envoy of the United States for dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, and as the chief of national intelligence in Trump's first term as president.

A quick end to the war in Ukraine has been among Trump's main pledges during the presidential campaign, although he has never explained how he would achieve such a thing.

"Keith has a distinguished military and business career, including serving in highly sensitive Homeland Security roles during my first administration," Trump said on his social network.

Kellogg has previously presented Trump with a plan on how to end the war in Ukraine.

Kellogg's plan to end the war, which began when Russia invaded the sovereign territory of Ukraine in February 2022, involves freezing the battle lines at their current locations and forcing Kiev and Moscow to sit down at the negotiating table , according to Reuters./REL
