Blinken: Path to a Palestinian State Necessary for Israel's Security

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken reiterated on Wednesday the need to find a path that would lead to the creation of a Palestinian state. Speaking at the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos, Secretary Blinken said that without a Palestinian state, Israel will never have real security.

Secretary Blinken said a Palestinian state is necessary for the long-term stability of the region.

"It has to be a government, a structure of government, that has the authority to give the Palestinian people what they want, that meets their needs," Mr. Blinken said.

But he stressed that for such a government to be effective, the right conditions must be created.

"In other words, with the support, with the help of Israel, not with its active opposition, because even the most effective authority will have difficulties if it faces the active opposition of an Israeli government."

Mr. Blinken acknowledged that getting to that point requires tough decisions and an open mind to that prospect.

But he adds that a coordination between Arab countries and Israel in the region is necessary to isolate Iran, which the US diplomat called "the biggest concern in terms of security".

Such a thing, he said, is also necessary to avoid the suffering of both Israelis and Palestinians. He said that the lives of both parties are equally valuable.

"What we are seeing every day in Gaza is terrible and the suffering we see among innocent men, women and children saddens me beyond measure," he said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu leads a right-wing government that opposes Palestinian statehood. He has said that the war will be long, stressing that it is directed against "an axis of evil", led by Iran and the three groups that support it in the region: Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis./ VOA
