More than 300 companies and financial institutions plan to report on the impacts they have on nature as part of efforts to stem the collapse of biodiversity, delegates in Davos, Switzerland, were told.

This data, which was created by the G20-backed Nature-related Financial Information Task Force, requires groups to share more information about the risks, but also the opportunities, that their interactions with nature provide.

In this way, company boards hope that they can make decisions that will be more positive, in terms of impact on nature, and help countries to fulfill the commitments they made during the biodiversity talks in 2022 at the COP15 summit.

"This is a pivotal moment in corporate environmental impact reporting," said David Craig, Task Force leader.

"This is a clear signal that investors, lenders, loan guarantors and companies recognize that their business models are highly dependent on nature and climate and should treat these as strategic risks, but also investment opportunities."

After launching a two-year program of work in 2021, the Task Force published its first recommendations in September 2023, after over 250 institutions tested them during their development process.

The recommendations are based on four principles – governance, strategy, risk, impact measures and objectives – and they aim to push companies to explain how they assess and manage related issues and how they can improve their performance./ REL
