Conversations with the Chinese president/Biden shows the purpose of the meeting

US President Joe Biden said Tuesday that his goal during talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping this week is to resume normal communications between the two superpowers, including military-to-military contacts.

Speaking to reporters after comments on climate change at the White House, Biden said he is trying to change the US relationship with China for the better after a period of strained ties. The two leaders meet on Wednesday in the San Francisco area.

Biden's much-anticipated meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday is the highlight of his four-day visit to San Francisco, where leaders from the 21 economies that make up the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum are gathering for their annual summit. The talks with Xi are of great importance as the leaders of the world's two largest economies try to find a measure of stability after what has been a difficult year for US-China relations.

But the White House also wants to show APEC leaders that Biden can remain focused on the Pacific while trying to prevent the Israel-Hamas war from erupting into a broader regional conflict and persuade Republican lawmakers to continue to spend billions more on costly.
