The Ministers of Finance of the member countries of the European Union have agreed to share 920 million euros for Hungary, within the funds for recovery after the coronavirus pandemic, and amid the tensions of the EU leaders with the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban.

The EU executive last month approved the plan for Hungary to spend 10.4 billion euros for post-pandemic recovery, but the release of most of the funds has been suspended until Budapest meets the conditions for implementing the law.

However, about one billion euros have not been conditional, said the spokeswoman of the European Commission, Veerle Nuyts, on November 23.

The green light comes after Orban has been accused of being prepared to veto EU aid to Ukraine and block the start of Kiev's talks on joining the European bloc at a summit next week. if funds are not unlocked to his country.

Finance ministers have met in Brussels on the funds of 13 countries, including the plan for Hungary worth 10.4 billion euros, including 6.4 billion euros in grants and 3.9 billion euros in loans.

EU sources have said that four countries have abstained on Hungary's plan: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and the Netherlands.

The block could unlock more funding for Hungary as Budapest moves to strengthen the independence of the judiciary, an EU official said last week.

Amid growing concerns that Orban could derail key decisions on Ukraine at the December 14-15 EU summit, some senior European officials have decided to meet with him.

Charles Michel, the bloc's top official, met with Orban on November 27, with the aim of reducing tensions, while French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the Hungarian leader on Thursday in Paris./ REL
