Putin says he will run in Russia's presidential election in March

The Russian President, Vladimir Putin, has announced that he will run for another term in the presidential elections of Russia, scheduled for March 17, 2024.

According to the Russian state news agency TASS, Putin has announced that he will run again after attending a ceremony in the Kremlin to honor soldiers who took part in the war in Ukraine with the 'Golden Star of the Hero'.

There, Putin was asked by a colonel if he would run again, and he said yes.

A new term would keep him in power until at least 2030.

Putin was handed the presidency by Boris Yeltsin in 1999 and has remained in power as president or prime minister ever since.

Opposition politicians described the election as a fig leaf of democracy that adorns what they see as the corrupt dictatorship of Putin's Russia.

Imprisoned opposition politician Alexei Navalny and his supporters urged eligible voters in Russia to vote for "any candidate" other than Putin, even though "the final results will be manipulated".

Putin, however, has not yet made an official announcement about whether he will run in the elections scheduled to be held between March 15 and 17 next year.

According to analysts, Putin will not face any major opponent and is expected to seek as large a mandate as possible to hide internal disagreements about the war in Ukraine./ REL
