Migrants in dinghies in Britain / Suella Braverman unveils the 8-point bill

2023-03-07 20:50:00, Kosova & Bota CNA

The British Home Secretary has unveiled the new illegal migration bill which states that migrants arriving on dinghies will be "departed swiftly".

Suella Braverman said: “They will not stop coming here until the world knows that if you enter Britain illegally, you will be stopped and quickly removed to your country. And that is exactly what this bill will do. This is how we will stop the rafts."

Plan points:

• People arriving by raft will be detained for the first 28 days without bail or judicial review and may be detained thereafter if there is a reasonable prospect of leaving.

• The burden to remove those who enter illegally will be on the interior secretary, to "radically" narrow the number of challenges and appeals.

• Only those under 18, those who are medically unfit to fly or at "real risk" of serious harm to the country they have been relocated to will be able to file an appeal to stop their deportation.

• Any other claims, including the right to private or family life, will be considered remotely after they have been deported.

• People will be prevented from using modern slavery laws to oppose their deportation.

She added that the new safe routes have not yet been put in place, but said the law would allow for a "more comprehensive discussion" on them to allow "more legitimacy" on what they should be.

The Home Secretary said the bill is about defence.

"It is essential that the UK takes a strong but compassionate approach. This is, in essence, a package of humanitarian measures that sends the message to people: don't come here illegally," she added.

Rishi Sunak, visiting a Home Office joint control center in Dover after the announcement, said that "we have to somehow break the cycle of these criminal gangs" involved in human trafficking across the Channel by barge./ CNA.al
