Canada launches investigation into China's interference in its elections

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said an independent special investigator will investigate alleged Chinese interference in their last election, which was held in 2019.

The appointed investigator will review classified Canadian federal election reports and make recommendations for future elections.

Leaders of rival political parties have called for a public inquiry.

China has denied any interference in the election, calling the allegations "simply baseless".

Last year, local media reported that Canadian intelligence identified a "clandestine network" that supported Canadian candidates in recent elections.

According to reports, at least 11 candidates were supported by China in the 2019 federal election.

Citing anonymous intelligence officials, Global News reported that Beijing had provided funding to these candidates and that many of them had had Chinese campaign advisers.

The operation, which was reportedly led by China's consulate in Toronto, was intended to influence Canadian politics.

The attempted intervention is believed to have targeted the two main political parties – Prime Minister Trudeau's Liberal Party and the opposition Conservative Party.
