Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has called the wave of illness that has struck hundreds of schoolgirls across Iran's schools over the past four months "an unforgivable crime" and vowed that those responsible should be "severely punished".

The illness, which is suspected to be "mild poisoning" and has hospitalized many Iranian schoolgirls, has sparked public outrage over the authorities' failure to identify its cause.

"The authorities must seriously pursue the issue of the poisoning of female students," state media quoted Khamenei as saying on March 6.

The supreme leader had not previously publicly used the word "poisoned" to describe what was happening.

The first incident is believed to have occurred in November, when 18 schoolgirls in the city of Qom were taken to a hospital after complaining of symptoms such as headaches, coughing, difficulty breathing, palpitations and numbness in the hands and feet.

On March 3, the United Nations children's agency (UNICEF) said it was ready to offer support to Iran to help resolve a growing crisis after a mysterious illness hospitalized dozens of schoolchildren.

Germany and the United States of America have expressed concern about these reports./REL
