States have reached historic agreements to protect the world's oceans after ten years of negotiations.

The High Seas Treaty stipulates that by 2030, 30 percent of the seas will be in protected areas, with the aim of protecting and recovering marine nature.

The agreement was reached on Saturday evening, after 38 hours of talks at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

Negotiations on this treaty have been blocked for years due to disputes over funding and fishing rights.

Marrëveshja e fundit ndërkombëtare për mbrojtjen e oqeaneve ishte nënshkruar më 1982. Ajo marrëveshje krijoi zonat e quajtura dete të hapura – ujëra ndërkombëtare ku të gjitha shtetet kanë të drejtë të peshkojnë, të transportojnë dhe të bëjnë kërkime – por, vetëm 1.2 për qind e këtyre ujërave janë të mbrojtura.

Jeta detare jashtë këtyre zonave të mbrojtura ka qenë në rrezik nga ndryshimet klimatike, peshkimi i pakontrolluar dhe trafiku i anijeve.

Sipas vlerësimeve të fundit lidhur me speciet detare është gjetur se 10 për qind e tyre janë në rrezik të zhduken.

Në zonat e reja të mbrojtura, sipas traktatit të ri, do të ketë kufizime sa i përket peshkimit, rrugëve të kalimit të anijeve dhe aktiviteteve eksploruese, sikurse nxjerrja e mineraleve nga shtrati i detit që gjendet 200 metra apo më poshtë sesa nga sipërfaqja e ujit.
