Ukraine begins negotiations on the extension of the agreement on the export of

Kiev has started online talks with partners to extend the Black Sea wheat agreement, a senior Ukrainian government source said.

The source said Ukraine has not held discussions with Russia, which blockaded Ukraine's Black Sea ports after its invasion last year, but said Kiev understands that partners need to talk to Moscow as well.

The wheat agreement between Ukraine and Russia, which was reached with the mediation of the United Nations and Turkey, will expire on March 18, if the parties do not agree on an extension.

This agreement, which allows the safe export of wheat from Ukrainian ports, was reached in July last year.

Through it, a protected maritime transit corridor was created and designed to alleviate global food shortages by allowing the resumption of exports from three ports in Ukraine.

Ukraine is the seventh largest producer of wheat in the world and is projected to be the fifth largest exporter.

Wheat exports are important sources of income for Ukraine, especially after the destruction of its economy since the outbreak of war.

An eventual blockade on Ukrainian wheat exports would also affect price increases and even higher inflation./REL
