Ukraine demands investigation after suspicions Russians are killing prisoners of

Ukrainian authorities have called for a war crimes investigation after a video was released on social media that appeared to show Russian forces killing a Ukrainian prisoner of war.

"Shooting a captured Ukrainian soldier is a violation of the Geneva Conventions," Dmytro Lubinets, the commissioner for human rights in the Ukrainian parliament, wrote on Telegram.

The video showed an unidentified Ukrainian soldier being shot dead with automatic weapons after saying: "Glory to Ukraine."

According to the Geneva Conventions of 1949, which Russia and Ukraine have signed, torture, the intentional infliction of wounds, the killing of prisoners of war, the intentional targeting of the civilian population and the destruction of property without military necessity are considered war crimes.

Even earlier, Ukraine has accused Russia of mistreating and killing prisoners of war.

While Kiev has launched investigations into suspected war crimes, since its launch on February 24 of last year./REL
