A large explosion occurred in the Russian city of Belgorod late Thursday. The Ministry of Defense announced that one of its Su-34 fighter jets accidentally unloaded ammunition over the city, about 25 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. 

The government did not provide other details.

Belgorod regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said the explosion injured at least two people and damaged houses. 

Fighting between Russia and Ukraine in recent months has turned into a war of attrition, with neither side emerging victorious. But Ukraine has recently received sophisticated weaponry from its Western allies and is expected to launch a counter-offensive in the coming weeks.

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg declared on Thursday that the country of Ukraine is in the military alliance and pledged more support for the country during his first visit to Kiev since Russia invaded just over a year ago.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that Moscow may use "all available means" - a phrase some see as a threat to use nuclear weapons if Ukraine tries to retake areas occupied by Moscow.
