After a deadly parasite called "varroa" was discovered in Australia, millions of bees have been put into isolation.

The parasite, called Varroa, was first found in a port near Sydney last week, but has since spread across the country.

The spread threatens the honey industry and food production millions of dollars. Varroats weaken and kill colonies by feeding on them and transmitting viruses.

Authorities said any hives within 10km of the infected sites would be destroyed, while colonies within 25km would be inspected and monitored./ CNA.al
