Japan is facing the biggest heat wave in nearly 150 years.

Tokyo recorded temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, for the fifth day in a row, making this the worst hot weather crisis in June, since the start of recording these data in 1875.

The city of Isesaki, meanwhile, recorded temperatures of 40.2 degrees Celsius - the highest temperature ever recorded in Japan in June.

The scorching heat has boosted power outage warnings, so calls have been stepped up for people to save electricity where possible.

However, the Government is advising people to use air conditioners to avoid extreme heat, as the number of people hospitalized is increasing as a result of high temperatures.

Weather officials warn that the heat wave will continue in the coming days.

High temperatures have become more frequent and severe as a result of climate change.

The world has already warmed by almost 1.1 degrees Celsius since the start of the industrial age, and temperatures will continue to rise unless governments around the world continue to fight carbon emissions.
