Germany: Foreign support staff to deal with the situation at airports
German government ministers

Foreign support staff, especially employees from Turkey, who will be employed for a limited period, are expected to be engaged soon to help e.g. with baggage handling and control. This was announced by German Transport Minister Volker Wissing, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser and Hubert Labor Minister Heil at a joint press conference in Berlin. They made it clear that there would be no compromise on security. Assistants must also be paid according to applicable fees.

But it should be clear that foreign workers will pass the security check, Wissing continued. "It is the Ministry of Interior that is competent for this issue and there can be no exceptions."

"Error in personnel planning"

Wisssing had previously told German radio station Deutschlandfunk that new staff for security controls and baggage handling should be recruited as soon as possible.

DW reports that the federal government's tourism commissioner, Müller, blamed companies for significant personnel planning mistakes. Representatives of Germany's ten largest airports, federal police as well as other authorities and service providers are discussing the measures to be taken today. /CNA.al
