Alarm in Santorini/ Greece declares state of emergency

In Greece, the government declared a state of emergency in Santorini.

The island is located in the midst of intense and ongoing seismic activity that is shaking the Aegean and other islands in its vicinity, such as Amorgos, Anafi and Ios.

So far, thousands of residents and visitors are leaving en masse.

The state of emergency will be in effect until March 3, civil protection authorities said in a statement, as tremors continued to shake the area, increasing the risk of severe landslides and rockslides.

"The Municipality of Thira declared a state of emergency of Civil Protection following the decision of the Secretary General of Civil Protection, Vasilis Papageorgiou, to address the emergency needs and manage the consequences of the seismic activity that has recently occurred in the above area. This declaration will be valid from 02.01.2025 to 3.3.2025," the official announcement states.

On Wednesday night alone, six magnitude 4 earthquakes were recorded in the sea area around Santorini, followed by a stronger 5.2 tremor south of Amorgos.

The intense activity is also endangering residents who have decided to stay there. /CNA
